Parents of lost babies and potential of all kinds: come here to share the technicolour, the vividness, the despair, the heart-broken-open, the compassion we learn for others, having been through this mess — and see it reflected back at you, acknowledged and understood.

ttc | pregnancy | birth after loss > Question about period and producing milk after stillbirth

Our dear son Wallace died in utero and was delivered on August 31st when I was 37 weeks and 1 day pregnant. I have not gotten my period yet. I thought my milk had dried up a couple of weeks ago but I started leaking again today, and I've had intermittent brown spotting. Does anyone have any experience with this? My doctor told me to come in for a blood test if I hadn't gotten my period after 2 months, which is still about 3 weeks away, but I'm frustrated/concerned...

Hi Wallace’s mom—I’m so sorry to hear this, it adds a whole new dimension to grief...my period came back quickly (a month) after losing my daughter (earlier than you at 28 weeks) but I produced just a few drops of milk for the 9 months that followed, through my rainbow pregnancy, and for more than 2 years after weaning my son at 6 months. I never had much even when nursing but it was disconcerting...sometimes, after a hot shower, I still get a few drops (5.5 years after my loss and my son turns 4 next month!). I hope your period comes back soon. Hugs mama.

Thanks for responding, that is encouraging to hear. It makes sense actually because I stopped nursing my daughter only one month before I got pregnant with Wallace and then did produce some milk during my pregnancy with him. Not sure why I thought it would magically go away! Sorry for your loss but glad for your rainbow baby.
