Hi Nora's Mom,
I ended up having to have an emergency c section with my girls at 24.1 weeks, and my MFM OB told me I will need to have c sections for future pregnancies that I hope are still coming. She knew due to us already trying for 6 years at this point, and now my age being a factor too, that we would want to try again as soon as possible. She told me that to "optimize outcomes" (gotta love the scientific speak when we're talking about such tragedy) that it would be best to wait 6-9 months before trying again. She said, they ideally want to see around 18+ months between births, which would mean waiting 9 months, then hopefully 9 months of pregnancy = 18 months. She said obviously some women get pregnant sooner, and they can usually work with that, but again, she was quoting 6-9 months for "optimizing outcomes."
My fertility Dr on the other hand, said he considered me cleared to try again after 3 months, since I had had 2 relatively normal cycles at that point. In some reading since, and seeing what has transpired with other women in these circumstances, I know there are many that get pregnant again around 3-4 months, and they usually turn out just fine. The main rule to go by seems to be as long as your period has returned normally, and how you feel emotionally as well as physically. I would have been happy to conceive again at 3-4 months, but I had to have additional transabdominal cerclage surgery which meant healing for a month and waiting for normal cycle to start again. I'm now at about 6 months since the birth of my girls (and 6 and 5 months post loss), and I'm finally able to get a new cycle going at the fertility clinic again, and I'm just hoping beyond hope that this cycle works, as I desperately need something good to hold on to.

My doctor suggested 2-3 cycles, however he said I would be healed at 6 weeks. He made a good point saying that my body would not allow for pregnancy until it was ready. Basically, your body will know when it's healed and able to carry a baby. The only issue is a uterine rupture but if you are having another c section that shouldn't be an issue.

I lost Matthew after an emergency c-section. My doctor said wait at least 6 months if I desired a VBAC and 3 if I didn't care. I've heard same advice used by other docs, including a second opinion we received...

I then called the MFM and said this and she said the research out there was from really not great studies and that she would be fine with 4 months.

Really sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you're being well looked after...especially by your own self.
I lost my firstborn daughter Maia to a concealed placental abruption at 39 weeks, during labor, in December 2014. They did an emergency c-section but she only lived for 34 hours outside the womb.
I think it depends not only on your doctor, but also what kind of section you had (vertical or horizontal incision), what your hopes would be in term of delivery (vbac or c-section) , and the tests available to you. I'm in the UK and it's standard procedure to test for blood disorders when you have an abruption (sticky blood, lupus). These tests need to be done at least 3 months after your last pregnancy as otherwise results are skewed (ie, useless). In my case, one of the markers came back borderline so we had to re-test 2 months later. I wasn't bothered as I wasn't emotionally ready for pregnancy after loss (I really needed to grieve Maia and didn't want to be sobbing and miserable when pregnant with her sibling). But you sound like you'd like to try asap, which many ladies feel. I'd suggest you check on any tests they may be able to run before embarking on ttc'ing. If the abruption was caused by blood clotting issues, you'd need to inject daily throughout a subsequent pregnancy (heparin), which is NOT pleasant but might help prevent it from reoccurring so worth knowing, if you can.

Thank you all for your posts and information, it is much appreciated. I would plan to have another c-section out of precaution and fear of another abruption if I tried for a v-bac. So I was hoping that since I would plan for a c-section, which would mitigate risks of uterine rupture during labor, then I wouldn't need to wait so long. But I'm not sure if they're concerned about other risks as well. I just really need something to hope for and having to wait so long feels more stressful than just "seeing what happens" in terms of conceiving.

I think it really depends on your body and how well you have healed. Our doctor originally told us 6 months shortly after our daughter's death, but then at my 6 week post-op appointment she told us to let my body go through 3 cycles, which for me was 4 1/2 months. I am pregnant again, 18 weeks tomorrow, and plan on having another C-Section.

I'm so so sorry you lost your beautiful girl. Nobody should have to go through that. With my son, I had an abruption and emergency c section at 27 weeks. I had an emergency llow verticals c section, but the incision did go partly into the contractile area of the uterus. The doctors said because of this any fire pregnancies will require a planned c section.
The whole team of doctors told us that especially with a an emergency c section, the earliest they were ok with us trying to convince would be one year after I gave birth. I hate the medical stuff having to be strategical planned around loss too. I'm an RN so I did a ton of research also, and even in general (for people who haven't endured any loss at all) outcomes are the very best if subsequent burgs are between that 18-24 month window. That's what our doctors told us and the research I sought out myself agreed with it also. I hope that helps.
But almost more importantly... It's best to do whatever you need to be in the right place emotionally, whatever time frame that is for you, as long as it's not physically unsafe for you. It's been almost 14 months since our son died, and I am ready to get pregnant again emotionally but my husband isn't yet.
I hope that you can find peace in whatever time frame you have and that your family, support, and doctors are all on the same page with you!

Hi Nora's Mum, I am so sorry for your loss. I also lost my son to a placental abruption in September 2015. My Doctors cleared me immediatly to try again even though I had delievered by C-Section. They were much more concerned with me being emotionally ready rather than physically ready. I chose to wait for 7 mths or exactly 30 weeks from when I lost my son before begining to try again. I am very nervous about it all but feel that I will still be terrified if I wait 7 mths or 7 years. Wishing you all the best for your future pregnancies x
