Parents of lost babies and potential of all kinds: come here to share the technicolour, the vividness, the despair, the heart-broken-open, the compassion we learn for others, having been through this mess — and see it reflected back at you, acknowledged and understood.

ttc | pregnancy | birth after loss > Success stories with a cerclage?

Met with maternal fetal. We got the ok to try again! I will have a cerclage done at 12-13 weeks. Anyone else had one? Was it successful? Any advise, or anything I should know?

Mm,
I have a cerclage success story. I got it at 16 weeks. I carried my son to 39+5.
It was removed at 38 weeks.
I have an "incompetent cervix". (They need to seriously rename that by the way.) It hurt when it went in and it hurt when they took it out. It's nothing you can't handle. (the pain)
I wish you success and I'm sending hope.

Mm, this cerclage story isn't mine but it's actually two of them: an aunt had two after a stillbirth. My cousins are 24 and 18 (off to college in the fall for the younger one). They were difficult pregnancies and my aunt was on bed rest for much of them. I think the girls were born after 37 weeks though and, well, they're healthy, smart, young women now. Good luck.

I have 2 cerclage success stories.

My first baby died due to many reasons, one of which is a possible incompetent cervix.

My second baby...I had an emergency cerclage put in at 19 weeks, went on bedrest, had a c-section just past 38 weeks with a healthy baby girl (she's now 27 months old).

My third baby...I had a preventative cerclage put in at 12 weeks, went on to a "normal" pregnancy where I continued working, no real bed rest (just told to take it easy when possible, keep my feet up, no lifting heavy things)...had a c-section just past 38 weeks and had a healthy baby boy (he's now 7 months old).

As for the procedure itself...wasn't bad...they used a spinal (epidural) for the anesthesia, didn't feel it going in. It's an outpatient procedure, so went home after. Was told to rest and take it easy for a few days afterwards. Then, just was monitored throughout the pregnancy with internal ultrasounds every 2 weeks up until 22 weeks or so to keep an eye on my cervix and the stitch. Since I had to have c-sections for other reasons (gestational diabetes, previous c-sections that meant I couldn't have a v-bac, etc), they didn't take out the cerclage until right before the c-section (literally, I was wheeled into the O.R., they removed the stitch, then prepped me for the c-section).

I hope that you are successful in getting and staying pregnant and wish for you a great outcome!

Thanks for sharing your stories! I just found out yesterday we are pregnant! Excited, but very nervous. Anxiously awaiting the first ultrasound to verify heartbeat. Then getting ready for the cerclage. Maternal fetal makes it sound as if a successful cerclage will be the key to a full term pregnancy. Anxious and nervous!
