ttc | pregnancy | birth after loss > Ultrasound question

Hi all,

My OB has referred me to a MFM clinic for my second trimester ultrasound (I'll be 19 weeks when this takes place). This will be the second ultrasound I've had in this pregnancy. My first was just a simple dating one at 8 weeks.

I've never been to a MFM clinic before. From what was explained to me, this is a more detailed ultrasound, but I don't have much more information than that for now. Has anyone had an advanced ultrasound with their rainbows? What were your experiences?

During my pregnancy with Amelia, I had several ultrasounds at the MFM clinic and will be a patient exclusively with a MFM clinic for my subsequent pregnancies.

In my experience, the difference is that the ultrasound at the MFM is much clearer and easier to tell what is going on. I could always tell when we were talking with the tech what part of the baby they were looking at when I usually couldn't with the regular ultrasound (even though I know they can).

I love the MFM clinic because they are so used to dealing with high risk, worried mama's that they don't blink or treat me like I am crazy when I ask a thousand questions.

Hi Ginger,

Gentle congratulations to you.

I had one done on 5/19 at the MFM clinic (19w2d). They're great! I find that the tech talks to you more and explains the images they're looking at. The other nice thing is that a Doctor is on sight to answer any questions/concerns that may come up. The ultrasounds are very detailed and lasted 45mins. They took over 100 images of the placenta, umbilical cord, brain, spine, kidneys, heart, bones etc.

Hope this helps! Sending positive thoughts your way for your ultrasound. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you ladies for your quick responses! I have to do quite a bit of traveling to get to the MFM clinic, but now I think the drive is going to be worth it!

Out of curiosity, was the ultrasound in 2-D or 3-D? And did they give you a disc of the photos or print them off?

Ultrasounds are in 2-D. They will print off as many photos as you would like. I left with over 10 I believe. I think the photos are 4x5.. pretty good size.

Hi Ginger,
Im 23 weeks now, but I had the anatomy scan with MFM at 18 weeks. I now have growth scans monthly with MFM to check on baby's growth. As others have said, the scans are more detailed. The measure and look at everything! Mostly 2D images, but my doctor also looks quickly with the 3D when I go. I usually end up with 3 photos. I like that when I go for a ultrasound, the doctor always comes in and talks to me. The MFM doctor goes over the ultrasound and you can ask any questions that you have. If I had the scan in the clinic next to my OB's office I wouldn't get instant results, I'd have to wait until my next OB appt (unless something was wrong).
Good luck! I hope you have a good experience going there. I feel better seeing MFM for my scans, and they're always so nice.

Hi Ginger,
The MFM has such better equipment than my OB. At 12 weeks, I was surprised at how much detail we could see. We received a Cd with both photos and videos on it and were told to bring it every time and they would update it. Pretty cool. Hope your ultrasound goes well.

Hi Ginger,

We had MFM ultrasounds with our rainbow (now 20 months) and the bub I'm currently pregnant with. They are longer in length, done by more experienced technicians and involve a doctor signing off on them before you leave so I always feel so much more peace of mind after them than in regular ultrasound offices.

They usually offer you 2D and 3D pictures, sometimes video too, and our give you a disc to take home.

We also went to the MFM for our anatomy scan at about 20 weeks with our rainbow. We actually didn't like them as much as our regular OB, partly because they were all strangers. I think what was useful about it was that then the MFM recommended induction between 37-39 weeks, and somehow that carried more weight with our OB and hospital than if the OB had just agreed to it. We had all our BPP ultrasounds at our regular OB and actually felt like they had better equipment and explained more and had better bedside manner than the MFM. We won't go back to the MFM if we have another pregnancy. But, maybe your experience will be different.

Gentle congratulations to you,
hugs,
