Parents of lost babies and potential of all kinds: come here to share the technicolour, the vividness, the despair, the heart-broken-open, the compassion we learn for others, having been through this mess — and see it reflected back at you, acknowledged and understood.

parenting after loss > Angelcare recall

Hi mamas,

I know SIDS monitors have been discussed in the pregnancy thread and I figured some of you may be using Anglecare. I just saw that some of their models are being recalled because the cord could cause strangulation. Sharing just in case.

Yikes! That's kind of the opposite of properly monitoring for SIDS. I'm sure they'll get it fixed but that's a rough one... I'm thinking about getting the Snuza for our kids. If anyone has used it and liked it, I'd appreciate feedback (not to hijack the thread). Its kind of an expensive option considering we have two coming, but I also want to sleep at night.

Thanks for posting this, I don't have this brand of monitor but know people who do so will tell them!

Carrie, if I had known about snuza before my rainbow was born I would have got one instead of the under-mattress type I have. I'm in the uk and they aren't really advertised here for some reason (although they are available online I've since discovered).

Having the monitor under the mattress really helped me relax at night and it would have been great to have that in other places too (like daytime naps) and the fact that I ALWAYS forgot to turn off the monitor when taking him out of the cot - cue mad dash back when it alarms 20 secs later because it can't detect breathing! Doh!

Sorry doesn't really help but looking back I would have got one!

They do not advertise the Snuza widely here in the US, either. I had heard about it from others here on Glow. They are available on Amazon and we will probably purchase two through there. I hate that I'm so terrified of SIDS, but even though I know it is significantly more rare than stillbirth, since I know people who have had SIDS losses, I just can't get myself beyond it.

Hi,

We used the Snuza for our rainbow's first 5 months. It was great! That thing got used! He had it on anytime he even looked sleepy. It allowed me to actually relax enough to sleep. I was terrified of SIDS (my cousin lost her baby to SIDS at 13 weeks 3 months before we had our stillborn son). I know you can't predict or prevent SIDS, but that little Snuza helped me just to know it was keeping track of his breathing. We used it so much that the battery died after 5 months. That is the only reason I stopped using it. Now we use an under the mattress monitor. Ugh, knowing too much about baby death sucks!

I used the Snuza too Carrie, and it really did help me get some sleep. Otherwise, I would have spent most nights staring at my baby's chest making sure he was still breathing. You're not supposed to use it in the car, as it is not reliable there. And I ended up pulling over a couple of times 5 minutes into an errand just to make sure he was still breathing. Sometimes I swear I wished my rainbow were like my middle son who used to scream his head off if he was strapped in a carseat. For some reason, me too, past the 6-month mark, I started relaxing.

I also use the Snuza and love it.

It's worth noting that there have been 2 deaths in the past 15 years and the last one was in 2004. I'm wondering if it's more user error than faulty equipment? Just to keep things in perspective.

My above post was referring to the angelcare recall, not the snuza!! Just clarifying!

I wonder why issue the recall now then? Interesting timing. Either way, I think I would prefer the Snuza style monitor. Thanks for the feedback all.

Carrie!

I've been off and on glow and so missed you and S being pg! And twins! Wowsers!

My two cents on the monitor thing is that I just didn't do it. Couldn't make myself that crazy. got a video monitor for naps that aren't right next to me so I can zoom in and watch him breathe when I need to but doesn't go off inadvertently waking baby and making me frantic...cause that happens too. Anyway, just my two cents.

Thanks for the tip on angelcare. From what I understood of that recall though is that parents didn't put the cord under the mattress and babies were strangulated in the cord. Still heartbreaking and devastating for those parents though.
