Parents of lost babies and potential of all kinds: come here to share the technicolour, the vividness, the despair, the heart-broken-open, the compassion we learn for others, having been through this mess — and see it reflected back at you, acknowledged and understood.

Thanks to photographer Xin Li and to artist Stephanie Sicore for their respective illustrations and photos.

for one and all > Loss of a Beautiful Toddler

I am a 70 year old grandfather who lost his most treasured grandchild to Strep A in August. Lexi was 295 days old and the most beautiful, cheeky, brave and bright child who I loved beyond measure. I have been writing poems and observations but would like to discover a forum to share experiences with others who have sufered similar tradegies in their lives. Any suggestions gratefully recieved.

Best of Days:

I hear your footsteps on the floor,
You look through my bedroom door.
You check if I’m asleep,
Then closer still you creep.
I wait till your up really close,
Then sit up quick and kiss your nose.
Your startled! Now it’s smiles and giggles,
Then run in close for hugs and tickles.

We head off to the kitchen,
For breakfast you are starvin.
I ask what you want thats good?
Your special code, “Lex wants food.”
Spaghetti Bolognaise I prepare!
For some Mums this would be a scare.
But I’m a Grumps so I don’t care
Different rules for me, so there!

After breakfast you get your wish,
Stood on the bridge to feed the fish.
You throw the food on to the water,
I’m so proud of my granddaughter.
You watch the fishes swirl and feed,
They really demonstrate their greed.
I hold your top as you lean forward,
To explain a fall could be awkward.

Later on when we go swimming,
We are in the room “mens changing.”
I’d like to try another way,
Your gender holds no sway.
So your exposed to those who swam,
You point and clearly say “Old Man.”
They take it in good part,
You’ve won over every heart.

At the edge you jump straight in,
Lifeguard readies to dive in.
Now smiles spread all around,
As to the surface you rebound.
Then swim off to the side,
And hurry on to try the slide.
I can’t contain the inner thrill,
Your courage, verve and skill.

Supper and the dog walk done,
It’s time to have some bath time fun.
You let me wash your hair and bum,
Then, when dried, you roll and run,
We chase around the living space,
You really move at quite a pace.
Caught and dressed, it’s bed for you,
You’re clear this isn’t what you want to do.

Some TV time cuddled on the sofa,
Only time of day you become a loafer.
Another viewing of the Ogre Shrek,
It’s been ten times but what the heck!
It’s bedtime now and you agree,
Bottle, blanket and story.
Your asleep in minutes few,
Good night darling, we love you.
